Chapter Eight

Friday, two days later

Nearly home! Richard stepped off the train in Laramie and gathered his bags, exhaustion weighing him down more than the luggage. The funny thing was, it didn’t stem from physical exertion or discomfort, the way it usually did while he was working on his ranch. Rather, the mental exhaustion came from dealing with his family. On the outside, his family looked perfect. Happy, prosperous. Well-balanced. But when it came down to it, Richard found it difficult to trust anything his father said. Even his mother’s displays of affection seemed to be carefully rehearsed, as if she knew someone was watching.

As for his sister-in-law, Roxie, she was now widowed at the tender age of twenty-six. The same age as him. Even in her sorrow, she remained as beautiful as the day she married his brother. But what had surprised Richard the most was that Bradford and Roxie had never had any more children. To think they’d given up their child, thinking that a more perfect one would come their way, only to never be blessed with another.

At least Roxie had asked about Jemma . . . once. He had informed her that she was doing well. The situation with the tutor was still fairly new, but the children seemed to like Miss Haywood all right. It felt good to know he’d made the right choice in hiring her.

“Need a ride, mister?” the stagecoach operator asked Richard when he approached. “Where to?”

“One ticket to Belle.”

In less than an hour, he would be home at last.
